Digital efficacy against Corona – the new Epicom app

Freunde Liberias e.V. and Appsfactory are celebrating the joint launch of the Epicom app. Users can use the app to track Covid-19 infection rates and risk levels in Germany easily and effectively. It is also possible to ascertain one’s own personal risk of infection using a movement profile. Additionally, Epicom features links to all official websites of state governments, municipalities and administrative districts. This way, all official instructions relating to Covid-19 can be found quickly without a long search. The app is available for download in the respective app stores for iOS and Android.

“Epicom, whose sponsor is a non-profit association, was financed exclusively by donations. This means that there is no company behind the app for which user data could represent a valuable economic asset. The association Freunde Liberias e.V. is also politically independent and intends to make the app’s source code public,” explains Michael Kölsch, project initiator of the Epicom app and Honorary Consul of the Republic of Liberia.

“Appsfactory was convinced of the app’s potential in spring 2020 and was prepared to develop Epicom together with the association Freunde Liberias e.V. on a voluntary basis,” explains Dr Rolf Kluge, CTO of Appsfactory. “The app represents a solid, user-oriented and privacy-compliant service that meets the needs for security and transparency which have emerged from the current climate.”

Epicom was originally developed under the name “Ebolapp” for the victims of the Ebola epidemic in Liberia, West Africa. The app will continue to be used in Africa. Apart from Covid-19, it also captures data on other diseases including cholera, Lassa fever, measles and Ebola.

In Europe, the plan is to roll out Epicom in Germany’s neighbouring countries as soon as possible. In addition, frequent user feedback means that the app is subject to continual optimisation. Epicom will also be used in tourism after the pandemic, informing travellers about infection rates in the user’s respective destination country.
