Appsfactory celebrates its 10th anniversary: impressive growth with over 600 digital projects, 190 employees, and 4 locations

  • In its tenth trading year, Appsfactory, Germany’s most successful specialist agency for digital transformation, showcases its growth trend of recent years. The agency currently employs nearly 190 employees at 4 locations in Leipzig, Hamburg, Erfurt, and Munich. With a growth rate of 43.7 percent, which is well above average by sector standards, the agency was voted one of the ten fastest growing digital agencies in Germany in the 2019 Internet Agency Ranking of the German Association for the Digital Economy (BVDW). In the current financial year, the growth drivers of Appsfactory come primarily from the automotive, finance, and energy sectors.

    From a start-up with 3 employees to a medium-sized company with 190 employees

    Appsfactory was founded in 2009 by Alexander Trommen, PhD, Roman Belter, PhD, and Rolf Kluge, PhD. The newly established business, which was trading under the name of SmartRunner GmbH, focused initially on the development and sales of the SmartRunner running app. A pioneering step towards the current company development was the decision made in 2010 to switch from product to agency business, and to rename the company Appsfactory.  The first projects for the publishing and media industry created jobs for developers, designers, and QA employees. In the following years, the agency acquired new customers from a wide variety of industries.

    Today, Appsfactory works for over 90 clients in the media, automotive, finance, e-commerce, education, health, travel, and telecommunications sectors. Among its clients are brands such as Deutsche Bahn, FAZ, Karstadt, NDR, Porsche, Samsung, and Swiss Re. The apps with the broadest reach were developed for Tagesschau and the Eurovision Song Contest. Both apps came first among all mobile applications in app stores. Another important partner of the agency is Beurer. For years, the agency has been developing innovative health applications for Beurer. These are often apps for connected devices such as electric blankets or blood pressure monitors. In order to gain expert status in the medical sector, the Appsfactory mHealth team plans to obtain certification to ISO 13485 for software solutions that are classified as medical devices in the coming weeks. Appsfactory has won Daimler as a major key customer in the automotive sector. The group has contributed to the massive growth of the agency for around two years. Roman Belter, PhD, COO, responsible for steering all Daimler projects, says: “We are particularly proud to have implemented the Mercedes-Benz Mobile Software Development Kit (SDK), which Daimler teams are using worldwide. What’s more, in the course of these projects we not only implemented apps for controlling digital processes in vehicles, but also, for the first time, the front-end in the vehicle. It allows Mercedes drivers to operate via the infotainment system in the cockpit.” The highlight for all Daimler teams of the agency was winning the Daimler Supplier Award in February 2018.

    Continuous development and the courage to innovate guarantee success and growth

    For years, in cooperation with long-standing customers, Appsfactory has been implementing innovative digital products using state-of-the-art technologies, and making them available to end clients. For example, the agency implemented Alexa Skills for FAZ, an Industry 4.0 project for machine efficiency control for Trützschler, and an internal blockchain application in collaboration with Leipzig Insurance Forums and IT ERGO. Most recently, ARD-aktuell presented Tagesschau 2025, an augmented reality application developed by Appsfactory, at the IFA. The app brings the newscaster and news into living rooms of the audience.  Alexander Trommen, PhD, CEO of the agency, describes the reason for the success of Appsfactory as follows: “Successful applications are almost always custom developments, which are optimized to suit the intended purpose. Our experience in the customer-centred development of custom software helps us in the area of digital transformation projects. This is because digital transformation cannot be achieved by implementing standard software in a company. What follows is a great demand for custom software developed by specialists like us.”

    The principle of always focusing on the user and app usability also ensures the quality of Apps implemented by Appsfactory. This has already been recognized by a number of experts. The agency has been awarded various international and national awards, including the UX Design Award, the Lovie Award, and the Webby Award. In 2017, Appsfactory was one of the first agencies in Germany to be certified acc. to the Google Agency Program, before Trommen, Kluge, and Belter made it into the top 5 of Saxony’s Entrepreneur of the Year 2018. In August 2018, the agency was certified as Microsoft Certified Gold Partner.

    5-year plan with further growth and transparent objectives

    Managing directors are aware of the fact that successful and healthy growth requires adapted or new structures. The processes are continuously optimised to this end. For example, this year has seen the implementation of project teams with industry expertise, and a new hierarchical level, which reports directly to the three managers. It has been staffed with the relevant specialists (Director of Engineering, Head of Projects, and Technology and Director Creation and User Experience).

    Which direction will Appsfactory go in the coming years? “There are many goals …”, states Rolf Kluge, CTO of the agency. “It would be great to implement the app for the German national football team. Of course, we also wish to continue growing and to become Germany’s number one agency for customised solutions and high-performance backend applications”. In order to meet all the requirements of our growth plans in terms of physical space, all Leipzig colleagues will be relocated to a new office in 2020. For the other locations, too, all signs point to expansion. The Munich location is currently being expanded, and the team in Hamburg will move into new office in the first quarter of the year.
